That who we are, is of are doing is it not? Could it be completely out of are hands and we do not even know.
The stuff that defines us is what we choose to believe. You could think your self as a nice person and truly believe it, but to someone else you might be the most annoying person in the world. What make us, us is what we believe is reality. No one else can change you view of the world but you. They can influence but they cannot change.
Pieces that make someone that they cannot control are somethings like; sex, race, financial situation (if under 18), how many siblings you have, student and many more. Society likes to put a lot of emphasis on these detail when all of these, really mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. The best way to look at, this is the stuff that makes us human and not a person with a personality.
We do have control over what defines us, who you hang out with and how you chose to react to situations is 100% in you hands. so choosing to react non-violently (the best choice) is completely up to you. Things you can control are (more or less); aggressive, passive, kind, mean, if you act on your personal bias and many more. Intelligence cannot really be put in this same category because, personally I believe we all have the ability to be smart but we all don't act on it. Others believe in that how intelligent you are is already predetermined at birth.
Fate vs Free will, the final frontier. The long awaited truth of the world which brings debate after debate, are our live in the hands of a more powerful force or are we living meaning less lives based on are decisions. Personally I do not believe that every choice was predetermined, but we are here for a purpose and a reason. How we chose to live is up to us, but I think they're is a goal meant for everyone. "It's bad to kill. Guns kill. And you don't have to be a gun. You are what you choose to be. You choose. Choose." - Iron Giant. I love the movie Iron giant, this movie probably influenced my choice on this matter with a strong message of free will and choosing who you want to be instead of what is planned for you for those who do not know the iron giant is a alien machine built for world domination. After befriending a boy, he decided to try and be a kind person. If you can call him that.
