Blog Task #2 Josh Harel
Arguably, the most important thing on the walls here is the school's name: Miles Macdonell. I think that a lot of people don't know who the man behind that name was. Personally, I don't think that that governor who issued a proclamation that prohibited indigenous and métis people from transporting a part of their thousands-of-years-old-culture, pemmican, outside of his colony aligns with my identity. That's just me though.
I noticed while walking past one of the library seminars that there was a mural of a maple leaf filled with different flags. I'm pretty sure that this symbolizes the different nationalities of the students who came as international students to study here. This is a great representation of all of the different cultures that you can find at our school.
I believe that the BUCKEYES acronym is a good rallying point for staff and students. The U, which stands for "united", is an important part of our identity. Even if you aren't too fond of this school, which is your choice, we are all BUCKEYES.

DeleteIf you don't think that Macdonell is a good figurehead, who would you suggest as a replacement?

ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the name of this school.
ReplyDeleteThumbs up for me!
I personally, along with most likely the majority of our school's population, wasn't aware of the meaning behind the school's name. This makes me think about the discussions about taking John A. MacDonald's name off of school's because of his actions against indigenous people. Do you think we should be renaming school's because of their namesake's actions?
ReplyDeleteI agree that the history of the school isn't well known. Awesome post!
